Going through old sketches, and finding some mems Going through old sketches, and finding some mems of what could’ve been! Living in possibility sure is luxurious 💎 deceptively simple n quick exploratory intervention at the iconic Bagley Wright house (designed by Arthur Erickson, landscape by Cornelia Oberlander!!! 1977). Repurposing a reflecting pool terrace while nodding to the massive art collection that used to be housed here. Selective native mid-sized trees to screen developments on the subdivided portion of the expansive 9 acre estate, and to carry your eyes across the original rolling fields and up through mature canopy.

Swipe for some goodness from when the house was first constructed. Photos by Timothy Hursley and Mary-Ann Stock respectively.

Stylized botanical concept I would love to explore more. O-hanami (literally “flower viewing”) is a Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers.

Don’t forget there are a lot of late-winter flowers to enjoy before the cherry blossoms too. I saw the biggest edgeworthia I have ever seen a couple weeks ago, what a beast. Witch hazel, bodbant viburnum, cornelian cherries - there is so much to love 🥰🥰🥰

Detail of a linocut block of a landscape in the ʻ Detail of a linocut block of a landscape in the ʻĪao Valley, West Maui (2020). From a reference photo I took in 2019. I think the blocks are always more interesting than the prints that get pulled off of them.

I personally enjoy the carving process more than the hand-printing. After all the carving, I can reproduce this image for the lifespan of the block, which is a very powerful thought.

Underpainting and color blocking for a painting of Underpainting and color blocking for a painting of the iconic sign in Vantage, WA. I completed this painting in 2020 for a joint show but I never varnished it (didn’t know that’s what you were supposed to do) so I think I’ll rework the background sometime.

Being + Becoming // Box With Photos of its Own Mak Being + Becoming // Box With Photos of its Own Making (2017), one of me + @calmserv’s first collabs when we were insufferable design students. A riff off of Robert Morris’ “Box with Sounds of its own Making”. Slide film, fir box, translucent acrylic, LED strip lights.

We both have collections of slide film and can swap out the slides if we wanted to which is extra fun.

About the project: Urban ArtWorks is pleased to be partnering with Comcast and CIDBIA to create this artwork designed by yours truly for the Nagomi Tea House wall.

The Nagomi Tea House is situated situated along S Weller St, which is a main pedestrian artery to and from King Street Station. The artwork is intended to uplift the area and inspire viewers through culturally relevant imagery from the PNW and East Asia, brought to life by vibrant colors and patterns.

The mural will enhance the visual experience of passersby on the day-to-day and deter graffiti in the long-term.
